Within a few days, the 1890s would be no more. The US was once again at peace, and the Spanish American war was over. Colonel Teddy Roosevelts rough riders had discarded their colorful uniform, and like everyone else, would soon be welcoming the promise of the first sparkling new year of the twentieth century. Mike Brannigan's saloon, is one of the few reputable oasis in lower New York City. It is early evening and two close friends are seated at Mike's bar, busily engaged in their second most favorite pastime, the match game.
