Under ordinary circumstances, the arrival of the stage in New London would have attracted a large crowd, but today, when they had seen there were no passengers on board, the townspeople went on about their business. Young Steve Archer, the driver, set his face into grim lines and pretended not to notice when he drew the stage to a halt in front of the station.
