The two men who rode the trail toward Flintrock were seemingly an ill-mated pair. Barry Allan, the younger of the two was a quieter type of man, while his companion Alabama Bates was heavyset and jovial looking, and he talked incessantly, despite the fact that a good deal of his drawling conversation was unheeded by the man who rode at his side. Alabama had thought that Barry's girl, Jane, would be waiting for him at Flintrock. The girl's father had fired Barry from their ranch where he'd worked as a cowpoke, and said that Jane was going to marry someone who amounted to something, and not a penniless cowpoke. So Barry decided to head off to find his fortune in the gold fields of Colorado. He didn't make a fortune though, he was just as penniless now as he was back then - and he had no intention of picking up where he left off with Jane.
