Jess Burse went to this father's house, Luke to discover that he had been beaten up. His father wouldn’t tell him who had done this to him and told him that there was no use going to the law about it. However Jess takes it upon him self to go see Marshall Matt Dillon as he believes that he knows who has done this to his father.
