Perhaps audiences were unduly affected by this wisp of a woman, whose thundering crescendo seemed a physical impossibility, and whose delicate pianissimos were a marvel of projected whispers of sound. What made this frail little woman able to run the gamut of romantic emotion Beyond question, the banked up fires of an enduring and raging love, that tragedy, disaster and separation could never quench.
