Doc is returning on the stage from the first weeks holiday he has had in over two years when he is shot between his ribs for no apparent reason though he seems to have been targeted. If Doc is to survive the bullet need to be removed and as Doc is the only doctor within 100 miles Marshall Matt Dillon is the only person Doc trusts to remove the bullet.
