The story is set in the Sussex Downs on the Bee farm that Sherlock Holmes had retired to in 1910. Cynthia Campbell who was Cynthia Browning in 1910 was also living in the Sussex Downs at that time. Her father had been dead for some years but her mother kept up the estate with a manager, Mr. Hugh Tanner. Cynthia recalls that time with great fondness and the pleasure of the people she knew.
