41 year old James R. James, a well educated man with no occupation tells the story. He is accused of killing his wife, burying her in a field of lilies. But he loved his wife and denies the accusation. He believes flowers love and hate the way people do. James loves flowers but his wife Gretchen, didn't like flowers at all. James grew and loved lilies but Gretchen thought they were a depressing plant. Gretchen looked out of the window and was convinced the lilies were watching and considering. She hated them and told her husband he had to choose between those flowers and her. He decided he would only cultivate half the lilies this year but there seemed to be more than ever and they flourished with the love James gave them and the lilies loved him and in his mind they spoke to him...
