Jim Pickings, a young newcomer to the Yukon territory had become a partner to an established trapper, Fozzy Norton, a bewhiskered old timer. The two men had worked hard during the long winter season, and with the coming of the summer weather, they left their cabin at Caribou Creek to take their load of pelts to the trading post in Selkirk, five miles away.
