The SS Avalon steams out of St Pedro harbor bound for Santa Catalina island, twenty miles off the California coast. It's a fine, sunny morning and the Avalon is crowded to the rails. Standing at the bow, all alone, letting the wind blow through her pale blonde hair is Mary Lee Gerritt. Suddenly she turns and asks a gentleman on the boat to take a photograph of her. He's a surly fellow, quite rude in fact, but Mary Lee quite likes him all the same...
