The story begins just as the Jury are about to announce their verdict on the case of Miss Janice Catmer vs Mr Rondeis. Her employer had been killed by her, accidentally, with a defective gun he had been showing to Janice in his home. But even after being acquitted of his murder, her life is being made a misery by everyone who she comes into contact with, who don't believe that it was an accident.
