John McDonogh, Pioneer of Free Education for the Poor

John McDonogh was a philanthropist from the early 1800s, and a key figure in advocating for and funding free education for underprivileged children. He is remembered for leaving a significant portion of his wealth to establish free schools for poor children in New Orleans and Baltimore. His will stipulated that the funds be used for "the education of the poor of both sexes.". To this day, the schools McDonogh funded continue to operate. They've grown into successful public school systems in both New Orleans and Baltimore, providing educational opportunities for countless children.
