Prior to the war between the states Cole Williams and his band of Missouri irregulars terrorised Kansas. He was reported to have been mortally wounded in his last monstrous raid but his body was never found. So when J.B. Kendal reporter for the London Times heard that a man said to be Cole Williams was dying in the river town of Batesville Missouri he travelled 300 miles in four days on the chance that he might get to talk to him.
