Charles Boyer plays his original screen role of George Iscovescu an international confidence man and gigolo. He is a Romanian on the Mexican side of the border and has met defeat for the third time in a year in his attempt to gain entry to America. He is told he must wait another seven years but when he meets American teacher Emmy Brown he woos her into marrying him simply so that he can gain entry quicker in to America. He plans to divorce her as soon as he gets to America but finds himself truly falling in love with her.
