Hattie Pelfrey is a mean old woman in most people’s eye but she did once save Lee Qunice’s life and he promised if he was in her part of Texas again he would let her have his late mothers earrings. The diamond earrings were the only things his mother had ever owned and Lee wanted Hattie to have them.
