When she arranges for an operation on her mother at the hospital where she works as a nurse, Pat Rogers knows that the case is almost hopeless and her sole aim is to make her mothers remaining days happy. She finds unexpected help when Nick, the woman hating owner of the cafe across from the hospital, lets Mrs Rogers think he is fond of Pat only to be told off by him in no uncertain terms when she tries to thank him.
