His name is Tomcheq her name is Marina. They live in a great mountainous forest that covers much of central Europe. Around them swirled distant echoes of the greatest war in history and yet their lives seemed but little touched. True almost every night they hear the drone of Liberators, Lancasters and B17s but their small town is hardly ever hit and true there are people who are being ruthlessly exterminated but as Marina keeps reminding Tomcheq it’s none of their affair. And it wasn’t until tonight when Tomcheq hears the voice in his head telling him, “This night you will deny me three times.” Tomcheq decides he will not lead the Nazis to shoot the old man and his granddaughter and that he will save them by hiding them deep in the woods in a secret cave.

When the soldier returns to their home Marina now hears a voice in her mind saying, “One of you will betray me.” There are times when it seems that the Lord sleeps and abandons the world to the will of the wicked and during such times the wisest course is to survive, to endure, to wait for a long night to end and to hope for a new day. But meanwhile one must live and right now Marina whose home is in central Europe during the Nazi occupation is listening to what she must do if she is to live. The Nazi soldier tells her that she must tell him where her husband is hiding the fugitives or he will kill Tomcheq.

Meanwhile the old man who was once a chemist in Poland believes that his people must not barricade themselves in the synagogues and that they must come to the cave and he must create a Golem according to the Jewish legend to save them. Only God can create a living thing but the Golem is not a living thing, it is a force, a man made force. And so the old man makes a Golem, a giant man of great strength and power from clay that will save his people.
