Ned Beaumont is a small-time private investigator, who is hired by Paul Madvig - a powerful political figure - to investigate the murder of his political rival, and clear his name. Beaumont soon discovers that Madvig is innocent of the murder, but meanwhile he is drawn into a web of intrigue involving his fiancee, and a group of gangsters.
