It began in a hotel in San Francisco where Roger Elliott had taken a room to wait for Paul Sheldon an old friend of his who was flying in from Kansas City to join him. Some weeks ago he and Paul had been invited by Paul’s sister Jane to spend a few days at her home in the beautiful but rugged big country a 150-mile south of San Francisco. They’d accepted Jane’s invitation with enthusiasm as evidence of her complete recovery from the shock of her husband’s death. Then Roger receives a surprise note from Jane cancelling their invitation followed by a frantic call from the housekeeper saying that Jane’s husband had returned from the dead…
