Simon Templar is on his way to Long Island when Luis’s taxi breaks down in terrible rainfall in a remote area. Suddenly a man comes running towards them anxious for a lift. He’s a taxi driver and left his cab in at the Hawthorn’s house whilst leaving in a hurry because there were “things” nearer to his cab than he was. He went on to explain that nobody had lived at the Hawthorn’s house for over a hundred years but tonight in town he picked up a fare to go there. The guy went in to the house and asked him to wait so he got out of his cab to stretch his legs. That’s when he noticed the house was all lit up and figured someone new must have bought the place but when he looked in through the window he sees the folks who used to live in the house a hundred years ago sitting round the table having dinner…
