George Washington was of course, as you know the first president of the United States and was in the White House from 1789 to 1797. The time of this story was 1795 when Washington followed the advice of Alexander Hamilton and finally accepted the John Jay treaty with England only to avoid a war. The controversy involving freedom of the seas and the returning of Negro slaves captured during the revolution ruined the career of the secretary of state Edmund Randolph.
