The crowded café in the Gold Stripe Hotel in Selkirk was the setting for a strange scene one November evening. Old Pat O’Hara was collecting for a mission as the genial Irish man went from table to table the hat he held before him got heavier and heavier as the men threw partially filled pots of gold in to it.
