Philip Marlowe has been looking for Dave Stroud for a solid week and the trail finally led him to a boarding house but Stroud had checked out and was on his way to San Francisco. Marlowe was trying to find out why a quiet young man named Dave Stroud had suddenly dropped everything that gave meaning to life from a lovely girl to a fine job and vanished completely.
