Kelly got the assignment because he’d never been in jail. A fresh point of view on the state prison the editor said, not an expose nothing sensational just a Sunday feature story to the average citizens reaction to the stonewalls and iron bars of a big penitentiary. It was a depressing state and he had seen enough when the prison warden took him to the old block where they kept the bad prisoners in solitary.
