The story begins in the foul alleys of Limehouse on a foggy December evening in 1890. Watson is out looking for an old friend and patient of his, Isa Whitney, who had gone missing. His distraught wife had asked Watson for help and knowing he had become victim to the shocking habit of taking opium he suspected he might find him in one of the vile drug dens of the waterfront.
