Just before dawn of the day in 1940, a small seagoing yacht with a crew of four and a passenger list of five sets out from a Honolulu yacht basin to head southwest into the open sea. This is the yacht of Dr. Paul Gerant, scientist and marine biologist and for many years a resident of the islands. Dr. Gerant is already in the ward room, and one by one his guests arrive for breakfast.
