Written by John Galsworthy Escape is a highly civilized high comedy indeed. In Orson Welles American version of the play the scene is in New York. Matt Denant is a law-abiding man who late one night after leaving a bar meets a lady of the night as he walks across the park. Detective Murphy tries to arrest her and Matt Denant goes to her defence and hits him. However the detective hits his head on a railing and dies and Matt Denant is sentenced to five years in jail for manslaughter.
