In 1849 Abraham Lincoln’s term in congress had just expired. He was hourly growing in the esteem of his countrymen and taken an active part in the campaign which resulted in Zachary Taylor’s election to the presidency. The newly sworn president called Lincoln to the White House to offer him a high office.
