At three o’clock that afternoon Danny Bryan had been riding high the top crime reporter in San Francisco with a nice apartment on Russian Hill, $200 a week from the Express and a lot more on the side. At four o’clock he was nobody just another newspaperman out of a job. He’d walked in to the club Nocturne just after dinner and decided he might as well give it to Teddy right from the shoulder she’d know about it sooner or later anyway. By nine he’d had four martinis and wasn’t caring much what he said one way or another…
