Maisie is reminiscing about the house she used to live in as a child, in Brooklyn. It was near to the river, and there was a view from the window, and on a clear day you could look out and see the laundry hanging out on the line. The boarding house she's living in now is no Shangri-La either, and is pretty far from Brooklyn too - but her room is nice, and so are the other boarders - especially Eddie Jordan. He's a guy who seems to know everything - well, everything except how to hold down a job, or keep a date!
