August 16th was just like any other day. It had been hot the night before, and Bill Harrigan and his wife had taken a mattress up onto the roof. It was even hot up there, so they didn't get much sleep. On his way to work at the 39th Precinct the next morning there was still some heat left over on the sidewalks, and this didn't improve on the stifling subway. But things were going to get worse - there was a threatening note from the 'Kawolski Killer' left on his desk, and nobody knew how it got there...
