Duke Red is a thoroughbred prize-winning horse, at least he was until he was destroyed after a serious injury and a $65,000 claim put in to Columbia Indemnities. Niles Pearson at Universal Adjustment Bureau needs Johnny's help to investigate the claim and this leads Johnny to San Pedro, forty miles south of San Francisco. As usual things are not as simple as they first seem.
