Once Major Lexus and detested Captain Zadermeisky intensely but now as he sees him lying there in the monastery and knows how radically he has changed so has the Major’s opinion of him. Zadermeisky had been a dashing self-confident skilled duellist with pistol and sabre and he had a way with women that had caused much disfavour among the men in the garrison. Major Lexus tells the priest the story he knows of Zadermeisky his great friend, and the priest tells Major Lexus how Zadermeisky had come to be here at the monastery.
