Jim Brandon, Fern and Inspector White are at a track meet at Rockland University and the first event is about to take place. It’s the 60-yard high hurdle race and Harold Harkness is favorite to win. Inspector White recalls that Harkness has been in the papers recently as he won the national chemistry prize a few weeks ago. But as the race began Harkness collapsed before reaching the first hurdle. He’d been shot in the back of the head.
