Wimper Walters and Towers Turner had been waiting in an isolated cabin for over an hour. Towers listened intently for a moment, and then threw down his cards as he heard hoof-beats thundering towards the cabin. It was the deputy, who they had been expecting. Wimper hid out of sight, whilst Towers welcomed him in, and then slugged him unconscious. 

Sheriff Jackson, generally known as Mustang, planned to retire as soon as he could decide which of his two young deputies to appoint as acting Sheriff to fill the unexpired term. He wanted to be sure that his selection was right, because he knew that the chosen one would probably be the newly elected official. One of the deputies now lay on a filthy bunk inside the shack, and the other rode up to the shack with the Sheriff. Towers and Wimper had set the scene perfectly, making it look like the deputy was a drunken gambler.
