Denmark Vesey fought for the end of slavery twenty years before the Civil War even began. They said a gamble was the start of it, and the winner was Denmark Vesey, a slave. He won $4000 that night, and on returning to the ship of his slave master Captain Vesey, he asked once again if his master was willing to sell him. Captain Vesey finally agreed, and released him for $2000. It is the beginning of a long journey for Denmark, for he is remembered as the man most famous for planning the slave rebellion of 1822.
