Alvin Peabody Cartwright was a wealthy old eccentric who called Johnny Dollar as his life was being threatened. He had received a chain letter, the same one two friends of his received and he was afraid to break the chain as both of his friends had ended up dead, as threatened in the letter, within six days of breaking the chain.
