They used to call them lawn parties, or fetes, or galas, but they've fallen out of fashion, as few people can afford them any more. Even in 1889 they were a province of the rich. There would be an orchestra for dancing, and picturesque tents dotting along the lawn. Inside would be games of chance, a kiss lottery, a silhouette artist, and invariably a fortune teller...
