John Matley lost $10,000 at crooked gambling joint and under duress is forced to sign to say he will pay $50,000 when his father dies and he receives his inheritance. His father Gus Matley has already got him out of a scandal with a nightclub girl last year and in his anger calls his lawyer and neighbor to come round immediately so that he can change his will and disinherit his son. However while on the phone to him he Gus Matley feels a severe pain in his head and dies. Lamont Cranston in his guise of the shadow discovers that Gus has been murdered and by who and why.
