It is September 1939 and Joan Morley is in Paris when she hears from her father in London that war is to break out. She arrives home to find Gerrald in uniform and is fearful that he is off to war. Gerrald hopes that she loves him and that they can be married after the war. She is very fond of Gerrald and agrees that they should be engaged. However when his brother David comes to England on leave for five days she falls in love with him and he with her.
