The little town of Wilderness Landing was at the north east corner of Caribou lake surrounded on three sides by the forest. There were only around one hundred inhabitants of the town, but because of its location, it boasted two trading posts - the larger belonging to the Hudson Bay Company, and the smaller belonging to the Gannon Chain. Jeff Allen was the assistant manager of the latter, and one midnight in midsummer, he was packing a knapsack by the light of the moon.
