It's a lazy afternoon, and the rain shimmers in the mid summer heat. Red Ryder has been cantering along with Jane Bruce, the school teacher of Painted Valley. Right now, their horses are mounting a rise to better see the gorgeous landscape before them. Then, on the ribbon of highway far below - the road to the town of Devil's Hole - Red's sharp eyes spy a strange drama. The freight wagon which runs regularly between Millersville and Devil's Hole has stopped, and as another wagon meets it, the driver begins swiftly moving goods from one wagon to another!
