Gabrielle Leggett had been missing for three weeks since her father’s funeral. She said she was going to their country place for a few days to be alone with her grief. When her stepmother Gertrude Leggett discovered that Gabrielle never arrived at their country place she was worried that she may do something to disgrace her. She also wanted her back as she needed her signature on some papers in accordance with her fathers will otherwise Gertrude could not go on living in the house. Gertrude employed Sam Spade to investigate.
