The Kay See herd had covered half the distance to town, when a band of outlaws swarmed out of a grove of trees beside the trail and opened fire on the cowhands. Outnumbered five to one, the men from the Kay See stood their ground, but to defend their herd against such odds was impossible, and finally the foreman shouted a command to head for the back trail.
