Dan Reid and Tonto had spent the night in Cold Water Canyon halfway between the town of Cold Water, and the partly finished bridge. They had broken camp at dawn, and an hour later they were in the narrowest part of the canyon, within sight of the bridge, which is going to cut fifty miles off the trail to the west. As they're riding along, they hear a man shouting for help, who looks to be badly hurt!
