The Church Murder Case opened with the shooting of Sidney Church wealthy practical joker who had previously reported to DA Markham that he suspected an employee Paul Wilson of stealing from him. Philo Vance and Markham found Wilson shot and although Markham is convinced that the wound is self inflicted Vance thinks otherwise.
