Chester has received a letter from Lawyers in Waco and is convinced that they are after him because he borrowed $4 from a fellow down there and never paid it back. Matt Dillon suggests that he open the letter and read it. It is in fact a letter informing him of the death of his cousin and bequeaths of $368.63 to Chester.
