Peter Courtney III, belonged to one of San Francisco's first families. He was rich and popular and had a beautiful wife, but few of his friends had ever met Mrs. Courtney. She seldom left the Courtney's estate. She felt happy and safe there. It was only an hour's drive into the city, but to Barbara, it was like another world, and nothing intruded - nothing, that is, except the newspapers and the mail that William, the old butler delivered.
