Matt Dillon and Doc are stood talking in the street when Roof Tucker rides up. His mother is gravely ill. She was fixing up the chicken house and had some nails in her mouth, when she accidentally swallowed one. Roof's father, Shel, hates doctors, and would beat Doc half to death if he found him at their homestead, but Roof's mother doesn't want to die, and Shel's supposed to be out on the prairies, so Doc gets his tools together, ready to ride out to help her. Marshall Dillon decides to go with him; just in case Shel unexpectedly arrives back to cause trouble. Despite Doc’s best efforts Mrs Tucker dies and Roof is afraid of what his father will do when he arrives home...
