Ezra Pike, a wheat farmer near the small western town of Hillsdale, was eating his evening meal with his wife Martha, when suddenly she pointed out of the window. Outside, there were a gang of cowpunchers, trampling down the wheat with their horses. Overcome with rage, Ezra raced outside with his gun to confront the men, but was soon defeated by the outlaws.
